TRAIL administrator to be Aetna
Change effective Jan. 1, 2023

For SURS participants who also are eligible for Medicare: CMS has just awarded a 10-year contract to Aetna to manage the TRAIL Medicare advantage plan, replacing United Healthcare. As part of this change, TRAIL participants will no longer have an HMO option, only a PPO option. Further, neither Carle Hospital nor the Carle Physicians Group have signed an agreement with Aetna to accept in-network charges, so all services obtained at Carle will be out-of-network. Our state-wide SUAA office is investigating these changes and will keep us informed. In the meantime, SUAA-UIUC has set up a website with helpful information.

The benefits choice period for those eligible for Medicare is Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, 2022. A series of in-person and online seminars will be held by CMS - here is the schedule. A more complete list of features of the PPO program will be mailed to participants in advance of the benefit choice period.

For SURS participants who ARE NOT eligible for Medicare, the next Benefits Choice period will be late spring 2023 -- dates have not yet been announced.

October 25 Meeting: Changes to the TRAIL program

Because of the growing concern about the switch from United Healthcare to Aetna and the apparent lack of an agreement between Carle and Aetna on continuation of coverage and costs for TRAIL members, the SUAA-UIUC Executive Board hosted a panel and town hall discussion of the changes to the TRAIL program (the Medicare advantage program that is offered by the state to retirees). The meeting was held on Tuesday, October 25 in Alice Campbell Hall, with a Zoom option also available.

Video recordings from the meeting are now posted along with other resources mentioned in the panel on our TRAIL page, including the handout and the Unfortunately, the Zoom audio was inadequate and speakers in the room were not audible to those on Zoom. Please accept our apologies for the technical glitches. Linda Brookhart kindly recorded her speech a second time to allow us to hear properly.
